Curtis Johnson for
Boulder County Sheriff

I have 28 years of experience providing public safety in Boulder County. Being Sheriff is a huge responsibility that I take very seriously. I hope you will place your trust in me and support my campaign to succeed Joe Pelle and continue to provide excellent services to Boulder County.

My Story

I was born and raised in Boulder County and except for attending college and graduate school out of state, I have lived and worked in Boulder County all of my life. I became interested in a career in public safety while in high school serving as a volunteer cadet with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

After graduating from Fairview High School, I attended the University of Puget Sound where I completed a Bachelor of Arts in American Politics and Government with a minor in Communication. I also completed an internship under George Epp (Boulder County Sheriff 1990-2003) while completing my degree.

After I graduated from the University of Puget Sound, I enrolled at The American University in Washington DC, where I completed a Master of Arts in Public Administration with an emphasis in Law Enforcement Management. While attending AU, I also worked for the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) as a research assistant.

In 1993 I returned to Boulder where I began my career with the Boulder Police Department. I served in a variety of progressively responsible roles during my 27 years with the department including Patrol Officer, Detective, Patrol Sergeant, Professional Standards Supervisor, Commander, and Deputy Chief.

In February of 2021, Sheriff Pelle offered me the opportunity to join the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office as a Division Chief. Returning to the Sheriff’s Office and becoming the 28th Sheriff in Boulder County has long been a goal of mine. Having the opportunity to serve the County and continuing to support the great work that our employees do every day is what I look forward to as your next Sheriff.

On a more personal note, I have been married to my wife for 28 years and we have two adult children.
